In this composition, the painter created his own work by synthesizing the architectural monuments of the Inner City with the 19th century Baku carpet called “Ichisehir”. Recalling the winding roads of the Inner City, the sense of disorientation he experienced there and the necessity of going to repetitive places, he depicted the ancient city in a circular form. This circular form also symbolizes the streets, which are dense like carpet loops, and the examples of local decorative art that line the streets. The painter decorated the Inner City with carpet motifs, adding these elements and contemporary elegance to his work.
The sky is synthesized with the central part of the carpet, complemented by stars, birds and other ornaments common in Baku carpets. The arch-shaped doorways, temples and the crown of the castle at the top of the city provide a transition to each other in the form of a crescent moon around the perimeter of the work. This transition merges harmoniously with the center border of the carpet. The light-shadow play of the monuments (except the Maiden’s Tower) complements the crescent.
The patterns on the monuments are associated with the oil towers and star motifs frequently used in Baku carpets. In the last border of the work, the castle itself and other darker parts are synthesized with the carpet. The main motif on the castle is the eight-pointed star.
